The positive thinker: Most people have known one. This person can be easily recognized by their incessant glee and seemingly impossible indifference to situations that would otherwise be perceived as unfortunate. He or she just seems to float through life, unaffected by the external hardships that are so obviously present. Always wanting to put a positive spin on life, the positive thinker is a master at concluding even the most annoying of problems to be mere happenstance that can only lead to greater good.

So what gives? How is this person able to sustain such an attitude? Shall we brush the incessantly positive off as merely pollyannaish beings, unwilling to acknowledge life’s true afflictions? If such a person frustrates us, even just a little bit, it is because on a deep level of our consciousness we are jealous of his or her ability to float through life on the magic carpet that is positive thinking.

Most people who endeavor to think more positively but find themselves struggling to do so on a consistent basis are faltering because positive thinking has never been made a true priority in their day to day life. Positive thinking is something that is to be much more than mere after thought. The goal will be to make it your default mental setting. The person who’s default mental setting is not that of positivity will experience life something like this:

Seemingly negative stimulus > negative mental reaction > revision process > positive after thoughts.

The skeptical among us may be thinking that surely there must exist circumstances in life that warrant negative responsive thinking. After all, we’re only human, and we have emotions, and sometimes we are blind sided by emotions that don’t feel good when they are the result of loss or misfortune.

Feeling a broad spectrum of human emotion is, well, human. We can’t negate that, nor should we try. The key to greater positivity is to reach a mental state of quiet indifference when a challenging situation arises. This means mentally moving away from the temptation to dwell in sorrow and towards a position of neutrality. Once a state of quiet indifference is reached, it will be much more natural for your subconscious to move your foremost thoughts into the positive spectrum. Think about it like this: Is it easier to go from a mental state of dwelling on a circumstance being terribly misfortunate to expecting good to arise, or is it easier to go from indifference to anticipation of good? The former will lead to frustration where as the latter will lead to a healthier mental state of being.

If we are to become habitually positive thinkers ourselves, we must first come to a deeper understanding of what it means to be a positive thinker. Chances are, if you’ve ever had any interest in personal growth topics, you’ve been advised to strive towards a more positive mind-set. The problem that most people have in actually doing so is that they approach positive thinking only as something that is to be a reaction to circumstance, but, true positivity is much more than reactive, it is proactive.

To be proactive in such thinking is to start the day from a mental state of positivity so that as life unfolds, your default setting will be that of the desired mind-set. As with many other endeavors in personal growth, the key lies in the changing of your subconscious mind-set through persistent thought action. The problem is that far too often people dwell in a state of thought re-action to circumstance while not having spent enough time in a mental state of thought action. Consequently, such a person’s mental state becomes undesirable and unable to respond to challenge in the context of a positive mind-set. If you only spend your thought energy reacting to circumstance it is likely that your subconscious mind-set is undesirable.

You will go about changing your subconscious mind-set by actively thinking in the most positive manner possible with ever increasing frequency.

The key is to start and finish your day with an exercise in positivity that involves thinking the most positively charged thoughts you can. I like to start this process out every day while taking my morning shower. I find this to be the most opportune time at the beginning of the day to think positively in a proactive manner. I usually start this process by focusing on thoughts of gratitude, as this immediately directs my mind-set towards that which is desirable to me. It gets the ball rolling in the right direction. When your mind is on that which you want and that which you are grateful for, you are in that moment not thinking about that which you don’t want. By being proactive in this manner of thinking you are tipping your mind-set in favor of the positive and desirable. Every time you do this you are altering your subconscious in a way that will be of profound benefit to you latter on when you need it most.

I continue this exercise with thoughts of what I want for my life, be it increasing abundance, prosperity, peace and happiness, or whatever else. While I do this I will actually feel the feelings of already having achieved whatever it is that I want to achieve. Doing so will breed within you a faith in your future success that will be a very powerful tool in drawing that success into your life. After all, if you don’t have some level of faith that you will achieve your goals, then why even have such goals in the first place, right? Right. If you are doing this exercise correctly you will be able to work yourself into a state of being absolutely ecstatic over all that you are in the process of achieving. You will feel incredibly alive and vibrant.

Once you have proactively practiced positivity enough, your new mind-set will be there for you just when you need it the most. When life’s trying situations arise, you will be ready. Your subconscious will kick in, allowing you to see the bright side.
